When a former naval officer, Robinson, loses his job, he assembles a team of English and Russian men to find a Nazi U-boat filled with gold that was sunk in the Black Sea. Ruggedly crafted as you’d expect from director Kevin Macdonald, with a sturdy ensemble led by Jude Law as a submarine captain of formidable sangfroid, the film nonetheless never quite sparks to life. Excellent submarine thrillers like Black Sea get much of their visceral oomph from making it seem as if the camera operator — standing in for us — is just as constrained as the characters. Moviegoers intent on testing the seasonal shallows may wish to dip a toe into Black Sea, director Kevin Macdonald’s high-pressure contribution to the submarine subgenre.
