Pixels is one of those bad movies that isn’t just casually bad, or shoot-the-moon bad, or too-close-to-the-sun bad, or actually kind of delightfully bad. It is lazily bad. It is confusingly bad. “Pixels” may appeal to fans of Sandler, James, and ’80s video games: It has a novel premise, and the action sequences can be entertaining. The world may be at stake, but the movie is more concerned with whether Sam will get the girl, an army colonel played by Michelle Monaghan. Sandler has found it vastly profitable to remain a mental middle-schooler into middle age, but, crucially, he’s stuck in a 1982 kid time capsule: His jokes are as fresh as the antique store.
